There’s a fine line between stress and anxiety. Both are emotional responses, but stress is typically caused by an external trigger. The trigger can be short-term, such as a work deadline or a fight with a loved one or long-term, such as being unable to work, discrimination, or chronic illness. People under stress experience mental and physical symptoms, such as irritability, anger, fatigue, muscle pain, digestive troubles, and difficulty sleeping.
Anxiety, on the other hand, is defined by persistent, excessive worries that don’t go away even in the absence of a stressor. Anxiety leads to a nearly identical set of symptoms as stress: insomnia, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, muscle tension, and irritability.
Whether it is a permanent high state of alert and sense of dread, random panic attacks or you have that constant feeling in your stomach, anxiety disorders can make your life hell. It might even make you question your own sanity! If you suffer from this, please remember that you are not alone and you can get help.
Anxiety can be experienced at different levels. It can be brought on by a fear of something that happened, or what we think happened and dread happening again. While most people will experience a relatively mild form of anxiety when facing a particularly stressful situation (such as an exam or presentation), anxiety disorders are very different. An anxiety disorder can disrupt the day-to-day life of an individual.
When a person suffers from an anxiety disorder, it can sometimes lead to them avoiding certain situations because they fear it may be a trigger. This can make regular life difficult, causing the individual to miss out on many opportunities. This constant fear can begin to affect their life, preventing them from achieving potential job promotions and developing personal relationships.
How does hypnotherapy work for anxiety?
Hypnotherapy is very successful for anxiety as by its very nature it is a very relaxing and calming process. During the session I will use a long "Progressive Relaxation Induction" which gradually relaxes your body allowing you to go into a trance state. From there the hypnotherapy can be used to resolve and past issues that are causing the anxiety or stress to be triggered.
During your sessions with me we will use a whole range of methods to help you rid your anxiety and stress for good, and my Empowerment Protocol will give you all the tools you need to face any issue head on without the need to stress or worry.
Hypnosis is becoming a more recognised method for reducing feelings of anxiety. It can help boost confidence and self-belief, while reducing feelings of fear and intense worry. It can help you develop the ability to access the calm state of mind needed to overcome the often-overwhelming emotions you are living with.
By aiming to access your unconscious and using the power of suggestion, it works to promote positive change. These suggestions are tailored to help you learn what triggers your anxiety and why, as well as changing the way you react towards them.
Under hypnosis, you can begin to learn you how to regain a sense of control and normality. It can help you understand what triggers your anxiety and how to cope when you start to feel anxious.
What should I expect at a hypnotherapy for stress or anxiety session?
We start with a chat. It’s how all the best relationships start! We discuss how you are feeling, what triggers your anxiety and what you want to change. We start to think about your future goals.
When we have established what we want to achieve and if you’re feeling comfortable, we’ll move onto your first hypnotherapy session. When your mind is in this wonderfully relaxed and receptive state, we can start to replace your anxious thoughts with more positive feelings.
Initially we would book up to 4 sessions, some people will not need all 4 while others may require more. Additional sessions can be booked depending on the individual persons need. At the beginning of each session we will discuss your feelings and progress. Most people say that they start to feel better after just the first session! The follow up sessions will drill down into more precise feelings. I also give my clients simple exercises to do at home which helps to make anxiety management a natural part of life until it is no longer needed.
